Vitamin D and Diabetes

You’ve probably heard that Vitamin D is really important for overall health but do you know why?  Well, here’s one reason that’s good to know during cold and flu season: Vitamin D supplementation is 10 times more effective than the flu vaccine in people with low Vitamin D levels! Another reason it’s important is that Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the onset of Diabetes, which unfortunately is a condition on the rise. Vitamin D: important in osteoporosis, but SO much more!

Most people have heard that Vitamin D is important for preventing osteoporosis, but don’t realize how many other aspects of our health it’s involved in. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to not only bone disorders and diabetes as I mentioned earlier, but also to cancer, immune system dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease.

Since it’s National Diabetes Awareness Month, let’s talk about it’s connection to Diabetes. In one of my recent posts on insulin resistance increasing risk for breast cancer, we discussed that insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar. When we over-consume carbohydrates and sugar for years on end, we end up with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance has been implicated in many conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer, including breast cancer. And in my last post, we discussed its connection to Type 2 Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, which is often referred to as Type 3 diabetes. 

Vitamin D, Insulin Resistance & Diabetes

So, what role does Vitamin D play in insulin resistance and Diabetes? Well, Vitamin D maintains normal release of insulin by the pancreas. Low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to insulin resistance and the onset of diabetes, and supplementation has been shown to improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity in Type 2, as well as in Type 1 Diabetics. It also reduces inflammation, which is really cool because we know that inflammation is involved in insulin resistance, as well as all chronic conditions.

If you remember from my post on turmeric for cancer prevention, turmeric’s active compound curcumin also helps reduce inflammation and improve insulin control. So Vitamin D and curcumin together are a great combination as a therapeutic strategy and for prevention of inflammatory conditions, like diabetes.  


It’s important to get Vitamin D levels checked with a blood test to determine how much Vitamin D you should be taking. A good dose for people that don’t get adequate sunshine, especially during the winter months, is 4,000 to 8,000 units of Vitamin D3 per day. Individual dosage is going to depend on what your current blood levels are, whether you have any conditions that require higher or lower dosages, and your size, for example, a small child and a fully grown adult wouldn’t take the same dose. Check with your healthcare provider to find out what dose is right for you.

When it comes to supplements, look for Vitamin D in the form of Vitamin D3, which is the natural form of the vitamin that your body makes from sunlight. The supplement that my husband and I take is from a company called Designs for Health, and is called Hi-Po Emulsi-D3 Liquid which has 2,000 units of Vitamin D3 per drop.
