Three Steps to Overcome a Weight-Loss Plateau

1. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting, or time-restricted eating, is a great tool for overcoming a plateau. With this technique, you just increase the amount of time of your overnight fast and delay eating breakfast until later in the day. For example, I follow a 16/8 eating pattern in which I fast for 16 hours, and I have an eight-hour eating window. So I stop eating by 8:00 p.m., and I don’t eat again until noon the next day. But studies show that even 12 hours of fasting has beneficial impact. This technique is great for decreasing fat mass, but also maintains muscle mass, and has so many other benefits on health and lifespan.

2. High-Intensity Interval Training

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is another excellent technique to implement to breakthrough stalled progress. This style of exercise is great for supporting hormone balance that will boost metabolism and promote weight loss. HIIT is a short duration workout, typically anywhere from 4 to 30 minutes in length, that incorporates periods of high-intensity exercise with a short rest period between rounds of activity. These workouts typically incorporate resistance training and overall are a great way to overcome a weight-loss plateau and amplify your progress.

3. Tracking

A really great way to gain insight into what could be holding you back is to track your food intake for two-to-three days and see how many grams of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins you’re consuming. To achieve a fat-burning metabolism, shoot for your carbohydrate total to be less than 50 grams per day, and aim for your healthy fat consumption to exceed 60 percent of your daily calorie intake. Two helpful food-tracking apps include MyFitnessPal and CarbManager.
