Healthier Sides and Appetizers That Won’t Set You Back

A few weeks ago, I talked about ways to make healthier cocktail choices during summertime cocktail parties, barbecues, and get togethers. Today, I’m going to talk about healthier sides and appetizers that you can pair with your grilled meats or main dishes at these gatherings. They taste delicious but won’t leave you feeling like you need to unbutton your pants to make room.

As I mentioned in my last post on keto-paleo eating, I follow and recommend a dietary plan that’s low in carbohydrates and high in healthy fats. So when making decisions about what to make for healthier sides and appetizers, I tend to think about how I can incorporate nutrient-dense foods that are low in carbohydrates, high in healthy fats, and have a ton of great flavor.

Healthier Sides and Appetizers

There are so many great foods to talk about, but I’m going to give you suggestions for three sides and three appetizers to consider for your summertime gatherings.

Side Dishes

Grilled vegetables with a balsamic and avocado oil glaze

Spice up your traditional grilled vegetables by giving them a balsamic and avocado oil glaze. My favorites are zucchini and peppers, but any low-carb veggie is great! Brush the veggies with avocado oil and balsamic vinegar while cooking, and finish with salt and pepper.

Bacon-wrapped asparagus

Anything with bacon is typically a hit, so wrap any vegetable in uncured bacon, and your guests will surely love it.

Coleslaw

Coleslaw is a staple for barbecues. Kick yours up a notch by using a broccoli slaw base, avocado oil mayo, a twist of lemon, and use a low-glycemic sweetener like Swerve or monk fruit in place of refined sugar.

Appetizers

Guacamole with fresh veggies

Bring your appetizer game to the next level with a guacamole recipe to wow the crowd. Serve it with fresh vegetables for dipping or as a topping for grilled meats.

My sister, Jess, makes the best guacamole, and I want to share her amazing recipe with you today.

Deviled eggs

Use coconut oil in the deviled eggs to make a more tropical version, or add bacon to make a more savory version.

Zucchini boat tacos

Fill hollowed out zucchini halves with taco meat and serve them with taco toppings and the delicious guacamole recipe that we have above!

Hopefully these healthier sides and appetizers will light a spark for you to get creative, play with recipes, and enjoy your get togethers that much more!
